Surtees killed in Brands Hatch accident

Henry Surtees, son of legendary F1 champion John, was killed in a freak accident during a Formula Two race at Brands Hatch.

The 18-year-old was struck on the head by a wheel which had come loose from the car of Jack Clarke after he had gone off into the barriers between Westfield and Sheene.

Surtees was knocked unconscious by the impact, with his car then running straight on into the barriers at Sheene before coming to rest at the side of the circuit.

The race was red-flagged and medical teams rushed to the scene where they removed the driver from the car and gave him treatment.

Surtees was then transferred by helicopter to the Royal London Hospital for further treatment, but his injuries proved fatal.

The driver, whose father John is the only man ever to have won the world championship on both two and four wheels, had been tipped as a potential future Formula One star following impressive performances in both F3 and F2.
