SUMMER LEAGUE
Warriors' Ellis hurt; outlook uncertain
Janny Hu, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, July 7, 2006
(07-07) 04:00 PDT Las Vegas -- Monta Ellis had the entire Warriors' front office raving about his breathtaking ability last year. Now, one innocent-looking move has them holding their collective breath.
Ellis was driving the lane during practice Thursday when he planted his right foot and his leg gave out on him. He took two awkward steps, collapsed onto the court, and lay nearly motionless for several minutes.
Team officials said Ellis sprained his right knee and will be re-evaluated today, but the initial prognosis didn't look good. Ellis spent the rest of practice on a table with his hands on his head -- clearly in pain -- as the Warriors' training staff immobilized his knee. He left the arena on crutches.
"He just planted," coach Mike Montgomery said. "We'll have to wait to see how the knee feels, if it swells. But it's been tough."
How tough? Ellis' injury marks the third straight year the Warriors have lost a key player during summer league.
Forward Chris Taft injured his lower back after dunking on an opponent last year and underwent surgery in March to alleviate the lingering pain. Taft essentially had his rookie season wiped out and does not expect to be back in playing form until training camp.
In 2004, Mickael Pietrus dislocated his shoulder on the first play of the first summer league game after running into a screen. He also needed surgery and missed the first month of the regular season.
"It's like the Curse of the Bambino," said assistant Mario Elie, who is coaching the Warriors' summer league entry. "When Monta went down, I said, 'Not again.' "
The injury comes at a peculiar time for the Warriors, who have a pending trade with Utah that will send Derek Fisher to the Jazz in exchange for three players. Fisher was the Warriors' main backup and insurance policy for starting point guard Baron Davis, and his departure opens up significant time for Ellis.
Golden State was planning to give Ellis time at the point this week to familiarize him with running the Warriors' offense. That appears unlikely now, but Montgomery said Ellis' injury should have no effect the team's plans for Fisher.
"That's a separate issue; that thing needs to be solved on his own," Montgomery said. "But again, it's way premature. (Ellis) could be out playing again tomorrow -- it's doubtful -- but we'll have to wait before we put the cart before the horse."
Ellis had minor surgery on his left knee two months before last year's draft, which partly caused him to slip to the Warriors in the second round. His latest injury completes an unwanted hat trick for Golden State's 2005 draft class, as none will be available when the Warriors open summer league play tonight against Portland.
Forward Ike Diogu will miss at least the first two games with inflammation of the left knee. Diogu said the injury was not serious and "just a little something." He has not practiced with the Warriors and spent Thursday evening's session doing one-on-one drills with 17-year NBA veteran Buck Williams.
Taft is in town, but will not play as he continues rehabbing from back surgery. Golden State is also missing this year's second-round pick Kosta Perovic, who has commitments to the Serbian National Team and has yet to negotiate a buyout with his club team.
"We're a frustrated group," Elie said. "This was the time for (Monta) and Ike, two guys who really need this summer league, and now we don't have them. But you got to push through it. It's part of the NBA life."
