Match reports
A 2-1 win over FK Riga wasn't enough to see Bohemians progress in the Intertoto Cup at Dalymount Park tonight, with the Latvians edging through on the strength of their away goal. [Video: manager's comments]
Shane Quinn writes: Bohemians welcomed FK Riga to Dalymount, seeking to overturn a first leg 1-0 deficit. Riga, whose squad contains seven international players, have been in flying form recently, losing one match in the past three months.
A cautious approach was expected from the Versliga team and so it turned out, with Bohs starting the more positively. Killian Brennan’s vicious cross-cum-shot almost crept in at far post for him. Moments later, Neale Fenn displayed the sort of technique everyone has come to expect from him but his chipped ball to Crowe was cut out by the Riga rearguard.
The retreating Powell then showed fine anticipation to hook a threaded ball away from the onrushing winger, Andrei Agafanov. Žavoronkovs tried to lob Murphy from behind the centre-circle, but his audacious effort sailed clear of the bar.
With almost half the season underway, Brennan’s assist tally is the envy of every playmaker in the league. With Heary cynically taken down, his floated free-kick found the towering McGuinness at the back post. McGuinness's looping header was sent back towards where it came from, and nestled into the far corner (21) to even things up.
Genadijs Morozovs’s men who, like Bohs, finished third in their league last season, seemed slightly stunned, consistently giving the ball away as the hosts sought to double their tally.
Two minutes later and Riga goalkeeper Čepčugov produced heroics to twice deny the unfortunate Crowe. The first arrived from a Brennan corner that he beat away with his fists; the second was a re-bound snapshot thwarted with an outstretched foot.
Joxer was proving quite a nuisance to the Riga defenders as his darting runs encouraged them to repeatedly fell the 21-year-old winger.
Bohs had settled much the quicker in the first half-hour, enjoying supremacy in midfield, despite Cronin limping off after 20 minutes to be replaced by Hunt.
Riga’s best moment arrived five minutes from the break when Brennan collided with Crowe, with the ball dropping kindly to Shpakov. The striker produced a fine run and shot, but Murphy was equal to it, beating out at his near post for a flag-kick.
As in the first half, Bohs again began sharply at the start of the second. Joxer will wonder just how the visiting keeper prevented him from opening his account. His low, angled drive was kept out by Čepčugov’s outstretched fingertip, as it flew past the post for another corner.
Mindaugas Kalonas almost surprised Murphy when he let fly on his weaker right foot. His long-distance drive dipped at the last moment but Murphy caught cleanly.
It seemed that the most likely way Bohs would net would indeed be from another set-piece. A trademark whipped free from Brennan almost produced another goal. But Crowe didn’t connect as he intended, as the ball nicked the outside of the post.
And that missed chance was to cost the home side dear as the Russian, Gints Freimanis, seconds on, crossed for Grigori Chirkin to claim the all-important away goal when his stunning shot flew past Murphy (65) from 12 yards.
The equaliser seemed to suck the life from proceedings, as the Latvians tried to play keep-ball to frustrate their opponents.
McGuinness was moved up front, with Bohs reverting to a 3-5-3 formation as Fenn sank back into midfield.
Bohs were then given a glimmer of hope when Mezeckis clumsily fouled Brennan in the area (90) – the winger slotted calmly to Čepčugov’s right.
Riga were placed on the back-foot for the remainder of stoppage time. However, Bohs were not helped when Heary was harshly sent-off for a last-ditch tackle on Shpakov. And, with a shortage of options up front due to Jason Byrne’s battle with fitness, the Gypsies must now try and recapture their lead over St Patrick’s Athletic at the table’s summit.
