On team effort: Until the overtime, but they shoot 47 free throws they out rebound us 20 something, we turn the ball over 22 times. Those are three areas we were talking about we needed to do a good job especially on the road so that’s disappointing. The missed free throws in regulation, missed a dunk, missed four straight free throws and still have a chance, we did a lot of good things in terms of fighting back but overtime they made every hustle play, they made shots, they did a great job
About the Knicks getting tired in overtime: I think we got discouraged a little bit. There was one hustle play. Stephon (Marbury) makes a great hustle play, Ricky (Davis) hits a three pointer, but the big thing, you can’t go 18 for 33 from the free throw line and get beat by 22 on the boards put them on the line 47 times and turn the ball over like us to win against a good team on the road. We have to do a better job we had 11 turnovers a lot of them jumping up in the air trying to make great plays, we got to improve on that.

We finished our regulation with our emotions high and flying and we just went into overtime and we just kind of came un-glued. (How frustrating was it) It was very frustrating, especially with it being the first game and wanting to win it so bad. We know that this is a long season and I think that we definitely took some steps in the right direction tonight but you have got to finish the game. (How did you feel about the effort in regulation) I think that it was great. We could have made a couple of free throws that could have won the game in regulation but it didn’t happen that way but we played a pretty good game up until the end. (Coach said that you guys seemed discouraged towards the end) I didn’t really feel that out on the court but from a coach’s perspective and him being around the game for so long that he probably sees it differently from what I see. But I didn’t get that feeling out on the court at any point during that game.

I thought that we fought back and that we played hard. In overtime we just let them get to many pressure plays that they converted.
Boston Celtics President Arnold "Red" Auerbach
What do you think of the impact of Larry Brown coaching New York, and Phil Jackson in LA, for those teams? Well, I think Phil Jackson – they’ve got a pretty good ball club out there, but he’s got his built-in excuse. Larry Brown -- whatever he does is a plus. So they’ve got everything going for them. You could’ve taken – I won’t say anybody, but you can take any knowledgeable coach, and put them in those positions, and they can’t do any worse. If LA doesn’t make the playoffs, it’s building. If New York doesn’t make the playoffs, we’re building. You know? That’s all.
How good a coach do you think Larry Brown is? Larry Who? Larry Brown is a great coach. He’s probably the best coach in the NBA today, excluding the present coach. You don’t ever exclude that. He’s a very good coach. He gets the most out of his players. And the best he can do, He’ll have them hustling and scrapping and fighting the whole year. He’s a hell of a coach.

That was a hell of an overtime for us. I thought we played well in the second half. I thought we were really lucky in the first half to still be in the game, honestly. I didn’t think defensively we were great in the first half, but we hung in there, and we hung in there with effort. I thought Delonte West and Mark (Blount) were phenomenal. Obviously you look at Ricky (Davis) and Paul (Pierce). The points they scored were great. But those other two guys, I thought they were huge for us tonight. Delonte making the little plays, and that was a huge shot Mark made with, I think it was five seconds, on the baseline out of bounds. That was huge. He stepped up and made that shot. I think that was big for him, as well.
Re it seemed the two teams couldn’t shake one another during regulation: No. In the first half it was more of them trying to spurt, and us trying to come back. In the second half it was us trying to spurt and them coming back. And I thought some of our execution down the stretch was iffy, where we had chances to run a play we took a quick shot and let them off the hook. The thing I told them at halftime: you must make them play defense. We were in the first half coming down, taking quick shots, which was not allowing them to play. We wanted to make them play defense so maybe we can get a good shot. I thought when we did that we were pretty good. But it was a close game. New York’s a good basketball team. They’re big. Their size is pretty amazing. (Eddy) Curry is a load, I’m going to tell you. He’s a load down there. We tried everything down there on him. He’s just a tough guy to guard.
Re Delonte West: He did all the little things. That’s what makes Delonte a good player, is what he did tonight. Is he a pure point guard? No, he’s a guard. He does make a lot of little plays, the blocked shots, the loose balls, getting the deflections. That’s what makes him a good player. When he doesn’t do that, he’s not a good player. When he does do that, he’s a really good player.

It’s great, game number one against one of our division rivals, get off on a good note, giving the guys some confidence, it feels great, it feels great.
Well we just didn’t get our heads there, we know we should have closed the game out, we used it as momentum and Ricky Davis really carried us in overtime, did a great job attacking the basket taking shots. It was an overall great performance by a lot of people, I mean Mark Blount, Delonte West really showed some good tonight the way he was all over the floor did a great job at the point guard. Mark Blount, Raef LaFrentz and go down the line.

Re different from last year..he’s running the show: Well it was different in the sense that last year during this time I was on the sideline with injuries. It was nice to have my name called out there in front of the home fans with Red in the building and some of our legends, so that’s memorable for me

I know what I can do, I’m not worried about what people have to say about me, I know what kind of player I am, I’m not here to keep harping on the same situation over and over again.
Re feeling good to get out there tonight: It felt good to get out there and get up and down and bang with the guys. It was good.
On what the Celtics did differently in the second half: The penetration killed us in the first half. Then you got those lobs and those rebounds once we started to contain and make the adjustments the second half to contain the dribble and we were all set.
