Djokovic also returned to good graces with the New York crowd by providing a bit of entertainment following his quick dismissal of Stepanek. After apologising for the short match, he first enlisted Todd Martin – the newest member of his coaching team – and then four-time US Open champion John McEnroe to come down to the court for a hit.While Martin declined, McEnroe shed his tie and mic and made his way down from the commentators’ booth to the court – still dressed in a white dress shirt and trousers. Djokovic imitated McEnroe’s temper on court, demanding tennis balls and arguing a missed call, while McEnroe impersonated Djokovic, bouncing the ball numerous times before serving.
“I didn't work it at all,” Djokovic said about his spot-on McEnroe impersonation. “It just comes if the moment is right. It comes spontaneous. I think the moment was right now. It actually was quite funny and the crowd loved it. That was the most important thing. And Johnny, of course, made a small favor coming down. It wasn't easy playing in jeans and suit and collared shirt, but it was a lot of fun.”
