2006-10-06 SEB BBL: Week One
First of all we have to give a lot of credit to ASK Riga’s performance. The debut of Latvian teams has been absolutely magnificent thus far. Of course, a lot of fans knew that this club was going to be among the upper teams of the SEB BBL, but their play exceeded the expectations. The Latvians crushed Atletas in a season opener 96:68 and got a solid 77:62 win in Kedainiai over Nevezis. However, their recent shocker against the defending champion Lietuvos Rytas raised the eyebrows of even the biggest skeptics. ASK Riga held off Vilnius’ club and with a help of a great clutch play by Curtis Millage who provided a buzzer-beater won the thriller on their home court 78:77. Former Lietuvos Rytas’ player Steponas Babrauskas was unstoppable; he had 27 points and was game’s top scorer. The fans should keep an eye on this ASK Riga club. They have a great group of players, they are very well coached by the Lithuanian Ramunas Butautas and their home arena – Arena Riga – that will only get fuller can house over 11,000 spectators. All eyes are on these Group B leaders. Let’s see if they can handle it.
